These are some of my favorite things.  Real treasure!  The first is the one I love best, a Chinese Checkers board that belonged to Vivian, my great-grandmother on Mimi’s side.  She says it’s over 100 years old.  I played it to bits when I was little, unfortunately all the marbles have been lost or eaten, I need some more but I’m trying to hold out until my youngest nephew is passed the putting things in your mouth stage.

These chess sets are the most impressive of the collection, Dadave bought them during his years in the air force.  The pieces in both sets are ivory, which I’m not a huge fan of, elephants are my favorite animals.  But I can’t deny the beauty of these hand carved little statues.  On the larger set, each person has a different face, hairstyle and weapon.  They remind me of the Terra Cotta Warriors I saw on display this summer in Houston.  They are self contained with little compartments for each piece, one lined in velvet and the other silk and the darker pieces are dyed with tea.  He actually got to watch them making a set.  We acquired these when we were helping my grandmother clean out my grandfather’s office, she wanted to throw them away.  We would not.  In saving the first set, Dadave pulled other out from a cubby in the closet and sent it with us for safe keeping as well.

This last one wins the kids choice award with my nieces and nephews.  They have no idea how to play backgammon(me either!), but they love to play with the latches and roll the dice.  I remember being fascinated with it when I was little too, my mom has a set that looks just like a little briefcase, I would use it to play office.  This set was Mimi’s and it looks more like chic luggage.  Love the plaid!

I hope everyone had a lovely day, for the American’s it was Thanksgiving; a day of family, food and giving thanks.  And football, which I can’t say I’m really all that into, but we spent the afternoon with my grandparents and Mimi is always a Dallas Cowboy’s fan(when they’re winning).  So we gorged on turkey and my green bean casserole and then watched the game.  She’s actually the only person I’ll watch the sport for and it’s almost fun with her, she gets quite animated.  Frequent screaming, both for good and bad, and as she puts it, she’s a fair weather fan, so if they start to do poorly, she’ll change the station.

I was so impressed with the with the composition of the first Flickr Gallery I was lucky enough to find one of my photographs in that I had to try one for myself.  I know looking at this website, you’d never guess, but my two favorite colors are blue and purple, so I decided to combine these in this first collection of my own.  I titled it ‘Whisper’.

Shopping through Mimi’s closet last week, I found some awesome vintage dresses tucked way in the very back that she hasn’t touched in probably 20 years.  This inspired a new series for my blog, My Grandparents Attic(actually it’s a loft, but I have on good authority that loft means attic in Danish).

My grandparents have some of the coolest belongings ever, collected through many years and much traveling.  Dadave was in the airforce and has been everywhere, they were even stationed in Okinawa for a few years when their girls were very young.  Not to mention he’s pretty crafty himself and has created some beautiful things of his own.  Since I’ve moved away, a few of these treasures somehow found their way to my home and I’m going to show some of them off over the next couple weeks.

And now, my ‘old but new’ dresses.  This first one was one of Mimi’s absolute favorites and I completely know why.  With that comfy elastic waistband, I’ve been wearing it around the house for days now.
